Common question about flow switch

1. Can the flow switch run through the flow exceeding the flow setting value?
The flow switch can usually pass a larger flow than its flow setting. The maximum through flow of many flow switches is generally 2 times smaller than the actual working flow. With the increase of flow rate, the pressure drop also increases, resulting in flow restriction.
2. Can the flow switch be installed obliquely, or must it be horizontal or vertical?
Yes, the piston type and baffle type flow switches use a small and solid spring or rely on magnets to repel each other, which is not affected by the installation attitude of the flow switch, and can be installed in any direction, such as ge-316 and ge-342 flow switches. Except for gravity float type flow switches, such as ge-311 and ge-312 flow switches
3. Can the flow switch be cleaned?
Yes. The design is easy to clean by flushing the flow switch with clean water. Some flow switches have detachable parts for a more thorough cleaning.
4. If a small caliber adapter is added to the flow switch, will it affect the pressure drop?
The pressure drop across the flow switch does not increase, but you can see the pressure drop across the connector itself. Each flow connection has a pressure drop associated with it.
5. Why do I need to add a filter?
Filtration helps prevent solid particles from clogging and is recommended, but many applications do not use them. Some flow switches are more susceptible to particles than others. The general rule to follow is that the more sensitive the mechanical flow switch is, the lower the set point, and the more susceptible the unit becomes to particles.
6. What is the difference between flow switch and flow sensor?
A flow instrument that detects flow at a predetermined set point. The flow sensor is used to monitor the flow and inform the user of the flow size (e.g. 5 GPM).
7. Can flow switch be used for liquid or gas?
Yes, we have flow switches for liquid and gas applications. Flow switches for liquid flow shall not be used for gas flow.
8. Can flow sensor be used for liquid or gas?
Flow sensors are limited to liquid flow. There are flow sensors available for gas measurement by other manufacturers.
9. Is the flow switch set to up or down?
Typically, the directory unit is set to increment. Rising setpoints are most commonly used in the coolant circuit to ensure proper flow. If required, calibrate the switch when the flow is reduced.
10. What is the meaning of SPST or SPDT Switch?
SPST (single pole, single throw) switch has only one wiring mode, which can be normally open or normally closed. This is the best choice for OEM applications. It ensures that it can only connect in one way.
SPDT switches are normally open and normally closed. When the drawings and final requirements are uncertain, the customer likes this option,
11. What is the minimum pressure required to operate the flow switch?
Generally, there is no minimum pressure requirement for flow switch, only the flow can meet the action of trigger switch. If you've been using a device that's below specification without problems, you can continue to use it. If you have a flow through device, you have overcome all the pressure drops in the system, including the flow switches.
12. Does viscosity affect it?
Yes, as the viscosity increases, the set point decreases. Check the specification of the flow switch for the recommended maximum viscosity.
